R&B originates from 1940's African-American communities.

  • 1965-1966, more than half of Toronto's bar bands were R&B-oriented.

  • Then, in 1975, Crack of Dawn was the first Black Canadian group to sign to a major label, Columbia Records; they were a funk-R&B group from Toronto.

  • While R&B is still making waves, mainly underground, hip-hop is debatably the most popular genre worldwide.

  • As to say, R&B is slowly fading into the underground world.

However, before you turn the page on R&B, Toronto-based KIANA has something to say.

About: Rooted in dark pop and R&B, KIANA's music is moody and hypnotic.

  • Her writing usually depicts complex and often uncomfortable emotions.

  • Authentic lyrics and immersive soundscapes capture heartbreak and personal growth.

Newest Release: KIANA's latest single, "Secrets," begins with a nostalgic 80s pop ambient tone reminiscent of awkward dance moves from that era.

  • The song delves into the complexities of a tumultuous relationship, touching on parts that may be difficult for others to comprehend.

  • The honesty in her lyrics may be painful, but it left me craving for more of her music.

Rest of the Music: The rest of KIANA's is partly pessimistic yet upbeat. It's like a Calvin Harris single, but make it a sad vibe.

  • Her music isn't something I would always listen to, but I do appreciate the messages hidden in them.

  • This does not suggest that I dislike the songs; I don't always care for sad songs. I don't think anyone does; it's a vibe killer.

Feedback: I would appreciate more uplifting music in her newer collection; a song similar to Secrets would be cool to hear.

  • Unlike some of her previous songs, Secrets and the songs from 2021 and on are more mature.

  • I would love to see this trend continue going into the new year.

Conclusion: As we enter the new year, I would love for you to continue reading our articles. So please come back!
